From Indian Classrooms to Saint Louis University: The KYF Journey

Global exposure is more than visiting a new country or university. Through the Destination Phase of the Kruu Youth Fellowship, students travelled from India to Spain, experienced a different academic environment at Saint Louis University and engaged with new cultures, perspectives and ways of learning. The journey helped them turn distant aspirations into real possibilities and gave students a broader perspective on the world they are preparing to enter.

Students today are growing up in a world without borders, where they can access information freely, connect with people across continents and explore opportunities that extend far beyond their immediate surroundings. Yet despite living in an increasingly connected world, many students still experience learning within the boundaries of their classrooms.

This creates an important gap in education today. While students are encouraged to think globally, they are rarely given opportunities to experience what that global world actually looks like. They can research universities, compare programmes and explore future pathways online but much of their understanding is shaped by information rather than experience. While information can create awareness, it is often experienced that builds perspective.

Perhaps this is why global exposure has become an increasingly important part of education today. Reading about a university is very different from experiencing one firsthand. Learning about another culture is very different from engaging with it and understanding a future pathway is very different from seeing how people learn, collaborate and approach challenges in different parts of the world.

Without these experiences, students are often left making important decisions based on assumptions rather than a deeper understanding of what those opportunities actually look like in practice.

When Learning Moves Beyond the Classroom

Creating opportunities for this kind of exposure was one of the key objectives of the Destination Phase of the Kruu Youth Fellowship. After spending weeks engaging with research, inquiry and university-level projects during the Discover Phase, students were given the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom and into the real world.

The journey from India to Spain was not simply about visiting a new country or an international university. It was about experiencing different learning environments, engaging with new perspectives and understanding how education, collaboration and innovation take shape in a global context. For many fellows, it was their first opportunity to step beyond familiar academic settings and experience firsthand the kind of world they are preparing to enter.

Experiencing Global Learning Firsthand

As part of this journey, fellows visited Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus. More than a campus visit, it was an opportunity to experience a different learning environment, engage with new perspectives and observe how higher education operates in a global context.

For many students, the experience challenged their assumptions about university education. What often appears distant through websites, rankings and brochures became more real and relatable as they explored learning spaces, interacted with the academic environment and gained a deeper understanding of how university education extends beyond lectures, examinations and academic outcomes.

More importantly, the experience helped students see new possibilities for themselves. What once felt distant or difficult to imagine became more real as they explored the campus and experienced a different learning environment and many began to think differently about their future studies, aspirations and the opportunities available to them.

While each student took away something different from the experience, all of them gained a better understanding of what learning beyond the classroom can truly look like.

"Before KYF, studying abroad felt like a distant idea. Visiting Saint Louis University changed that completely. Seeing how AI is integrated into everyday learning and experiencing a different culture made me realize how much there is to explore beyond textbooks. It gave me a clear picture of the future I want to build,” shared Aditi Singh, Grade 11 student from Vidyagyan School, Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.

More Than a Journey Across Countries

What made the experience particularly meaningful was not just visiting an international university but being exposed to new perspectives and ways of thinking. Through conversations, observations and interactions, students began to realize that there is no single path to learning, problem-solving or building a future. Instead, they discovered how different experiences and perspectives can open the door to new possibilities.

Experiences like these often-become powerful learning moments because they push students beyond what is familiar. Through travelling to a new country, adapting to different surroundings and engaging with people from diverse backgrounds, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and approach new situations with greater confidence.

In this process, they developed a deeper sense of independence, adaptability and self-awareness while gaining a broader understanding of the world and their place within it.

"Learning from Professor Maria completely changed the way I looked at AI. Instead of feeling confused by the technology, I became excited about its possibilities. Building our own AI agent and understanding how AI can shape future careers gave me confidence to explore opportunities I hadn't considered before,” said Abhas Bajpai, Grade 11 student from Vidyagyan School, Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh.

The Perspective Students Brought Home

The impact of this journey extended far beyond travel itself. Students returned with a broader understanding of higher education, a clearer perspective on their own aspirations and a deeper appreciation of the opportunities available to them. Many began to think differently about their academic goals, future pathways and the kind of experiences they want to pursue in the years ahead.

This shift became increasingly visible throughout the journey as students who initially approached new experiences with hesitation became more willing to ask questions, participate in discussions and embrace unfamiliar opportunities.

The confidence they developed did not come from having all the answers; it came from becoming comfortable with uncertainty and remaining curious enough to keep exploring.

"One of the biggest takeaways for me was learning from professors who brought real industry experience into the classroom. Building our own AI agent and understanding how AI works beyond theory made the sessions practical and engaging. It gave me the confidence to explore emerging technologies with much greater curiosity,” said Rudhiv Anand, Grade 11 student from Beyond 8, Chennai.

The most meaningful takeaway from experiences like these is not the places students visit but the perspectives they gain along the way. By stepping beyond familiar environments, they begin to see the world through a wider lens, develop a deeper appreciation for different ways of learning and gain the confidence to navigate new opportunities with greater clarity.

More importantly, they return with a better understanding of themselves, their aspirations and the possibilities they may not have considered before. In a world where students are increasingly expected to make important decisions about their future, experiences like this matter because they provide something information alone cannot: perspective.

Because some of the most meaningful learning does not happen when students are told what the world looks like.

It happens when they are given the opportunity to experience it for themselves.
