We Keep Asking Students to Think Critically. But Are We Giving Them Anything Worth Thinking About?

Critical thinking isn’t developed by simply teaching students how to think. It grows when they are given meaningful problems, encouraged to question what they know, and trusted to find their own answers. Project-Based Learning creates these opportunities by putting students in situations where they must investigate, evaluate evidence, make decisions and rethink their ideas.

Schools today want students who can think critically. We want them to question information, analyze ideas, solve problems and make decisions independently. Parents, teachers, universities and employers all recognize these as essential skills for the future.

But there is a question we don't ask often enough: What are we actually giving students to think about?

If students spend most of their time remembering information, finding the expected answer and following instructions, when do they get the opportunity to question, explore and make decisions for themselves?

Critical Thinking Starts Before the Answer

Critical thinking is not simply about finding the right answer. It begins when students have to figure out what to ask, what to question and how to make sense of what they know.

Why is this happening? Is this information reliable? Is there another way to look at it? What evidence supports this?

These are questions that cannot always be answered by turning to the next page of a textbook. Students need opportunities to examine information, question assumptions, compare possibilities and make decisions. They may get things wrong or change their minds along the way, but that is not a failure of learning. That is what thinking looks like.

The Problem with Questions That Already Have Answers

There is nothing wrong with questions that have a correct answer. Students need strong foundations to learn and understand new ideas. The problem begins when finding the expected answer becomes the main purpose of learning. When the problem, method and outcome are already given, students focus on getting the right answer instead of thinking about what they believe and why.

Consider a simple example. A student can calculate a family's daily water use by following a formula. But ask instead, “Your school wants to reduce its water consumption by 20%. Where is the water being used, what evidence would you collect and what would you change?” Now the student has to identify what information matters, collect evidence, question it and consider possible solutions.

The first question checks what a student knows. The second asks them to use what they know. That is where critical thinking becomes real.

Students Need Problems Worth Solving

The world students will enter after school rarely gives them a question with the method and answer already laid out. A doctor has to decide what information matters. An entrepreneur has to understand a problem before building a solution. An engineer has to test whether an idea works, while a journalist has to question sources before presenting a story.

The problem usually comes first. The answer comes later.

School has an important role in building knowledge and strong foundations, but if we want students to become independent thinkers, they also need opportunities to work through problems where they don't immediately know what to do next.

They need to consider different approaches, use evidence, make decisions and understand that changing their mind when they find better evidence is part of learning.

This is where the learning environment matters. If students are always told what to research, where to look, what to write and what answer to reach, there is very little left for them to decide.

Giving students more freedom does not mean removing structure. It means giving them meaningful decisions within that structure.

What should we investigate? Which sources can we trust? What evidence do we need? Which solution makes the most sense? What didn't work? What should we change?

These are the moments when students stop simply following a process and start thinking for themselves.

When students are given meaningful problems and space to work through them, learning starts to look different. They make decisions, test their thinking and take responsibility for where their learning goes.

This is one reason Project-Based Learning becomes valuable. PBL gives students a problem worth investigating and the space to make decisions along the way. They research, question information, test ideas, gather feedback and discover that their first solution may not work. They rethink, improve and try again.

The final presentation is only one part of the experience. The real learning happens in everything students figure out before they get there. PBL doesn't teach students what to think. It gives them a reason to think.

As students regularly work through meaningful problems, they become less dependent on being told what to do next. They ask better questions, look for evidence, explain their decisions and become more comfortable with uncertainty. When an experiment fails or feedback challenges their idea, they learn to rethink and improve.

That is the kind of independence we want students to develop.

So, What Should Schools Be Asking?

Perhaps the question is not simple, “Are we teaching critical thinking?” Most schools already are. The more important question is: “How often do students actually get to practice it?”

Are students given problems to solve, chances to question information, explore different ideas, explain their thinking, get feedback and change their minds when needed?

Critical thinking is not something students learn just by knowing its definition. They develop it by using it regularly as part of how they learn.

This does not mean schools need to move away from textbooks, exams or structured teaching. Students need knowledge, strong foundations and teachers to guide them. But knowledge should not be where learning ends. It should give students something to work with.

Whether students are learning about climate change, economics or science, they should have opportunities to use what they know to explore real problems, test ideas and find solutions. The goal is not to turn every lesson into a project, but to create more moments where students use knowledge to think.

We often say students need to think critically, solve problems and adapt to change. But these skills do not develop just because we list them as learning outcomes. Students need questions that make them think, problems that make them investigate and ideas they can test and improve.

When students get more opportunities to think, question and make decisions for themselves, critical thinking stops being something we teach and becomes something they practice every day.
